Is Atlanta The New Home of Game Design? – Industry Gaming

A career in the gaming industry would likely be the dream job for many gaming enthusiasts, and thanks to the Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act, relocating to Atlanta, GA might be a great career move for these individuals. The legislation, first passed in 2004, gives game design companies incentive to relocate to Georgia by offering a 20% tax credit to companies choosing to make the move. In recent years, Georgia has become one of the top game design locations in the country, and with over 100 companies now established in the city of Atlanta there is a new-found demand for a workforce trained in game design, game programming, and video game testing. When the career prospects/opportunities in programming began to increase, industry officials approached Gwinnett Technical College to help them in locating more workers possessing game programming skills. There were already programs focusing on game design being offered at Savannah College of Art and Design and also at the Art Institute of Atlanta, but there were not enough game programmers to create a sufficient and steady supply of jobs for the game designers. As a result, Gwinnett Technical College launched a simulation/game development two-year associate’s program.Parents may feel uneasy at the prospect of their children pursuing a career in gaming, but a spokesperson for Gwinnett is quick to reassure parents that game programming skills aren’t just used for the entertainment industry. There are a wide variety of other practical applications for these skills. For example, the military employs game programmers to create simulators that train personnel in battlefield tactics, tank-driving simulations, and even virtual weapon simulations. The medical industry uses game programming to simulate clinical scenarios for medical staff, and also to simulate pharmaceutical trials before actual live testing begins. Logistics companies also make use of such programming to track drivers, and to inform them of any potential hazards on their route.Gwinnett does, however, warn that students should be passionate about game programming. The course will require superior mathematical skills, and students will need to focus diligently on their work in order to get their head around game programming logic. Students will discover very quickly if game programming is right for them.John Thacher, director of Gwinett’s Computer Sciences program, claims that most of the game programming students are very passionate and curious about gaming. Thacher says, “In other classes, I’ll see students in the back of the room playing tic-tac-toe or texting, but our students are glued to their screens.” The course offers students a very intense learning experience that will prepare them for a career in game development. As the industry continues to grow, many Georgia companies are hiring new game programming and game design staff. While not every graduating student will get a glamorous job working for a video game production company, there are many opportunities available in the industry that can help start new graduates onto the path of a successful career.

Keeping Up With Gaming News – Industry Gaming

The gaming industry is a large sector of the economy, at tens of billions of dollars a year. Because it’s such an important and growing industry, there is a lot of news generated about it. There are a lot of players involved, from those making money by providing capital or controlling licensing, to those who design and develop the games, to those involved with development of hardware, to those assisting with distribution, and finally to the end users. You can take a walk down the aisle of any store that sells magazines, and you’ll likely find at least two or three gaming magazines. The gaming industry news coverage can be your source of knowledge that can help you improve your equipment and game play. Defeating Used Games: Why Incentives to Discourage Pre-Owned Gaming Are Awful – Industry Gaming

Do you buy your games second-hand? Then you are a complete cheapskate and the scum of the gaming industry. You’re worse than any pirate sailing the high seas of warez. Or at least, that’s what publishers want us to think. Whether you have the right to sell the products you have purchased is irrelevant: the sale of used games is damaging the games industry. When a new game is traded in or sold to a game store, that money is then kept by the retailer rather than reaching the hands of the hardworking developer who spent blood, sweat and tears on creating their pride and joy. The same game could be bought and sold numerous times and it can be argued that those purchases are a potential sale which has been stolen from the game companies themselves. It is true that you don’t hear the music or film industry complaining about their second-hand losses, but does creating an album or a movie compare to the amount of money and effort spent on developing a Triple-A game title? As always, it is the consumer that decides whether a game is worth its $50 price tag, and often they decide to go with a pre-owned price instead.Rubbish Incentives for New PurchasesGame companies already utilize a number of methods to gain extra cash after the release of their games in the form of downloadable content (DLC) and there are now incentives to buying new. Pre-order bonuses seem to be popular right now with many games including codes for additional DLC or specific in-game bonuses. We’ll be taking a look at some of the rubbish incentives offered by publishers to encourage new purchases and what alternatives would be more welcome.Exclusive DLC & Pre-Order Bonuses: Gamers aren’t new to the idea of receiving bonuses within collectors editions and the like, but more recently we’ve been seeing a lot of extra freebies within new games or as part of pre-ordering a title. Most of this is in-game DLC, such as new weapons and armor, new maps or various other cosmetic additions which don’t actually add that much to the game. In fact, most of this stuff you could probably live without. I don’t really need the Blood Dragon Armor in Dragon Age Origins and I can live without a tattoo set in Fable 3, thank you very much. I would go as far to say that DLC armor is one of the most pointless examples of a DLC incentive, ever. Although perhaps not as pointless as the Horse Armor from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. In some cases, the DLC offered is a little more substantial. Some games offer quests or missions, and this feels like more of a ‘thank you’ bonus. Bioware have taken this one step further by offering a DLC delivery service in Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2. This service allows players to download a series of free items, as well as access paid DLC. In Mass Effect 2, this included a few extra side-quests and exclusive armor/weapons (Groan). Player’s could also add a new character to their game squad, Zaeed, and he came with his own loyalty mission as well as a few small areas to explore plus a new weapon. Whilst this is a better incentive and adds more to the game, if you didn’t purchase Mass Effect 2 new, then getting a hold of Zaeed would cost you 1200 Microsoft Points ($15). Yikes. The cost and worth of DLC is something to discuss at a later point, but to judge the quality of future DLC, compare it to the Undead Nightmare pack from Red Dead Redemption. For only 800 Microsoft Points ($10), a whole new single player game is unlocked which rivals the original game. It’s a stunning example of quality DLC.Online Passes: Now this seems to be an interesting/worrying trend in recent games, delete as appropriate. It all started with EA as they introduced the idea of an ‘Online Pass’ for some of their major titles, such as Dead Space 2, The Sims 3, Madden NFL 11, etc. This online pass is a one-time code which gives access to online multiplayer functionality within their games. What this means is that you are restricted from playing online unless you either buy the game new, and thus have a pass code, or you spend $10 on acquiring this pass if you’re unfortunate enough to buy the game second-hand.A few companies have already started to take on this system, including Ubisoft, Codemasters, Warner, THQ and now Sony. Sony will be following the same trend by offering a code at $10 for second-hand gamers and this initiative will begin with the release of Resistance 3.Whilst online passes are a good method to create profits from potential lost sales, they’re also rather worrying as they penalize second-hand gamers, effectively stripping away a chunk of game content from the player. In some cases, the online portion of the game is much bigger than the obligatory story mode and if you’re already paying for services like Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus, then it just adds on an extra fee.Un-resettable Game Saves: Now this ‘incentive’ really does take the cake. In the recent Resident Evil Mercenaries title by Capcom on the 3DS, players are prevented from erasing their save data. This means that the game cannot be started from scratch and appears to be a direct attack against second-hand games. Now, it isn’t a big deal in Mercenaries 3D, as this data roughly translates into high scores and some unlockables, but imagine if this system was used in other games, such as an RPG? What if you bought a second-hand game which was already completed? As a result for this move, most rental stores are unwilling to stock Mercenaries 3D.But the worst thing about un-resettable games is that it also penalizes gamers who have bought the game new, as they are prevented from resetting their game data if they wish. What’s the Alternative? So, if these incentives which encourage us to purchase brand-spanking new games are not working, or are ‘slightly crap’ at best, then what is the alternative?Club Nintendo: Nintendo offer some of the more interesting incentives for new purchases. Each new game comes with a card which can be redeemed for points within the ‘Club Nintendo’ service. Here, gamers can spend their points on a wide variety of collectable Nintendo merchandise, ranging from posters to clothing. There are loads of items which can be saved for. Never mind that some of the better items require a handful of points and probably ten hundred Wii’s, getting physical items for your loyalty is a pretty neat idea.Imagine if you could be awarded with Microsoft points to spend on XBLA games? Or maybe you could spend those points on real world items, such as control pads, or posters? I would love to see real rewards as an incentive rather than some shoddy in-game armor.Casual & Digital Games: There is a reason why digitally downloadable games, such as those on XBLA or PSN as well as mobile gaming, have become so popular. They offer a great gaming experience for a cheap price. All of these services have grown over the years, from selling small retro games to fully-fledged gaming experiences which are big enough to make many full-priced games weep. I know I would sooner have Limbo on my Xbox than some dodgy Kinect version of Carnival Games, and it’s much more value for money too.Mobile and indie games are continuing to grow and many game developers are already aware that smaller games are an alternative to big budget titles. This doesn’t mean we’ll see the end of Triple-A games, but it does re-evaluate the value of such games.Lower Those Prices: Fact is, not everyone can afford to buy a full priced video game. We’re living in tight times, and with some titles selling for as much as $60, for many it’s a case of buy cheap or miss out. Some games are quite frankly not worth $50 and are reduced to half price in a matter of weeks. Even digitally distributed titles can cost just as much if not more than their retail counterparts. Pre-owned games are popular because they are cheaper. Simple, really.Whilst it appears that certain game stores are taking advantage of the popularity of used games to maximize their profits, especially as their pre-owned selection seems pretty overpriced anyway, pre-owned titles are also the lifeline for smaller independent retailers that battle against the larger chain stores. We all know that choice offers the best deal for customers, whether selling new or used games.Online retailers such as Amazon and Play.Com offer lower prices still, but I would hate to see these replace the magic of main street shopping. However, if retailers can offer better deals on new titles, then maybe this will encourage sales. So What’s Next?Perhaps the games industry needs to rethink their half-baked incentives and look at the reasons why gamers would sooner buy a second-hand game than fork out the cash for a shiny new copy. The industry also needs to shake off the idea that second-hand gamers are the enemy. We’re not pirates, we haven’t stolen a game. We’re just customers. However, the real problem lies with those retailers who maximize their own greed at the expense of the industry.

A Strategic Game Between Tesco and Asda in the UK – Industry Gaming

Price Wars in the U.K. Grocery Market:Price wars are a phenomenon that occurs across companies in various industries throughout the global economic system. In an oligopolistic market structure, players closely monitor the prices of each player and respond to any price cuts. This paper seeks to explore the strategic business methods being employed in the British grocery oligopoly and determine its effects on the economy using a game theoretical model. I will conclude that such price wars will drive independent retailers out of business, leading to a consolidated industry dominated by no more than four U.K. grocery chains.By definition, price wars indicate a state of intense competitive rivalry accompanied by a multilateral series of price reductions. In the short run, price wars can be ‘good’ for consumers due to a lower price structure in existing product offerings, and ‘bad’ for competing companies due to a decrease in profit margins as well as potential threats to its survival. In the long run, dominant firms in the industry could benefit as smaller, marginalized firms are unable to compete and shut down. However, it could be bad for consumers as the remaining firms may agree to increase prices, possibly colluding even beyond the price set prior to the price wars.Major Players – Tesco and Asda:In the U.K. grocery industry, both Tesco and Asda have utilized similar discounting strategies to gain market share. Prices at both stores are largely the same, as of the spring of 2005. Tesco’s market share as of 2002 was 27.1% and Asda’s was 16.9%, according to a study by BusinessWeek magazine. Sainsbury, an upscale grocery chain which in 1995 was the U.K.’s largest grocery chain, has fallen behind to third place with 16.1%. Safeway has a small foothold in the market with a 12.4% market share. The dominant players in this market are Tesco and Asda, and both are committed to price reductions – especially with nonfood items. Both Tesco and Asda have a goal of opening 10-12 new stores per year throughout the U.K.Tesco was founded in 1924 in North London by Sir Jack Cohen with proceeds he earned from Army services in WWI. By 2005, the company is an international grocery and retail chain with 2,365 stores around the world and a staff of approximately 367,000 employees. Tesco has had consistent growth in profit and sales over the past five years through 2005, and ten million visits per week take place by customers to its stores. Tesco has four key businesses; their core U.K. business, nonfood business, retailing services, and its international business. Tesco’s core market is in the U.K.Asda was acquired by Wal-Mart in June 1999. There are 265 supercenters and 19 depots across the U.K. and approximately 122,000 employees across the company’s operations. The Grocer magazine named Asda “Britain’s best value supermarket” five years in a row through 2005. Since 1999, there have been over $915M in price cuts (adjusted from British pound sterling to U.S. dollars). Growth in nonfood items have exceeded expectation, as 5,000 new general merchandise lines have been added since 2002, including specialty items in pharmacies, opticians, jewelry, and photo departments.Game Theory – “Hawk-Dove” Strategic Game:It appears that both players in the U.K. grocery market are engaged in a strategic game that is similar to the Hawk-Dove Game, devised and named by Maynard Smith and Price (1976). This game has been a very important tool for understanding the role of aggression among players in economic systems. The Hawk-Dove game has been studied in many scenarios across various academic disciplines and has been instrumental in the are area of evolutionary game theory. The idea here is that the Hawk is a very aggressive player, always fighting for some resource; the Dove is a pacifist, never fighting over that same resource. The goal of this game is to choose between the two strategies in order to determine how to share a common resource.Other assumptions in the Hawk-Dove game are as follows: (1) fights between Hawks are brutal; (2) the loser is the first one to sustain injury; and (3) the winner takes sole possession of the resource. Each Hawk has a 50% chance of winning over another Hawk. The Dove withdraws in any conflict with a Hawk and, thus always loses. When two Doves interact, both share the resource. This game has two pure-strategy Nash equilibrium, which determines the dominant strategy: One chooses to be a Hawk and the other chooses to be a Dove. There is also a mixed-strategy equilibrium, in which each animal chooses Hawk with a probability of one-third and Dove with probability of two-thirds. This is indicative of a distribution of strategies in a population in which Hawk is played one-third of the time and Dove is played two-thirds of the time. In other words, playing only Hawk or Dove exclusively, or in any other proportion, would be evolutionarily unstable. In reality, Tesco and Asda have both been playing the Hawk strategy. Why would this occur when it is not an equilibria of the game and, in fact, is the most suboptimal outcome? It is possible that neither company is aware that they are playing this game. A more likely explanation is that the companies are both willing to sacrifice short-term profits in order to be the dominant players in the U.K. grocery industry in the long run. Public records demonstrate that executives at Tesco see Asda as a big threat, even though the quarterly sales at Tesco are 1.5 times that of Asda. Tesco is very focused in this price-war environment, and the company has even displayed on their grocery shelves the listing prices for their goods vis-a-vis Asda and Boots, a drug chain in the U.K.This defense has seemingly paid off for Tesco, as it is still the market leader in terms of U.K. market share and net income. Furthermore, the company has been pursuing a unique marketing strategy based on a rich database of ten million customer surveys, customer panels, and mailed questionnaires with the goal of engaging the consumers in being empowered to redesign Tesco to best meet their needs and expectations.Asda has been growing at 10% per annum, in the meantime, and is a viable competitor for Tesco. Another player, Sainsbury, has been in continual market-share decline since 1995 due to its unsuccessful execution of a high-priced alternative. Safeway, yet another major player and household name in the U.K. grocery marketplace, filed for bankruptcy in 2005 and subsequently merged with William Morrison. These four players in aggregate represent 72.5% of the industry, as of 2005.Concluding Thoughts:Price wars in the British grocery oligopoly market have affected more than just Tesco and Asda. Both companies have been playing a Hawk-Dove strategic game, whereby both players are acting as Hawks. Their resulting actions have damaged the business prospects for independent retailers, such as local grocers and food shops, many of which have shut down as a result. Furthermore, local businesses across the value chain of the U.K. grocery industry, such as suppliers and distributors, have been negatively impacted as well.Tesco and Asda have been following this strategy since Asda entered the market space in June 1999. Such actions will likely result in the continued consolidation within the U.K. grocery industry, with no more than four dominant players in this space – with the largest market share going to Tesco and Asda.

Xbox Game Designing – How Much Could You Make? – Industry Gaming

One of the business sectors that is growing swiftly in the United States and around the world is that of the gaming industry. In the United States alone previous year, video games brought in revenues in excess of $12.5 billion. This strong growth is occurring when several industries are still struggling to pull through from the prolonged global recession. As the American economy improves the video game industry is guaranteed to see even greater growth. That means that the firms in this business sector will necessitate a fresh influx of qualified and educated employees so as to expand. There are a wide variety of job opportunities available in the gaming industry and they are classified generally into two distinctive groups. Around half of the individuals employed in this sector look after the business side of industry and doing tasks like management, public relations, accounting and product sales. The other half of the employees are the creative and technical staff that actually produce and design the video games. The job functions on the creative side demand people like animators, software engineers, illustrative artists, video game programmers, writers and graphic game designers. These job opportunities pay well for trained and qualified people. The most crucial job position on the creative side of the video game industry is that of creating and conceptualizing the computer game, a task undertaken by the game designer. The computer game designer comes up with the concept for the game and then works on designing all of the numerous features that go into making up a brand new large scale computer game. Most new video games are designed by teams of game designers working on a various tasks under the guidance of their team leader, the lead designer. The lead designer handles the entire project and is responsible for the staff and budget, so good administration skills are desirable.Working under the lead designer will often be several junior designers working on the video game. There are environmental or level designers, systems or game mechanic designers and designers who work for the development of the game designer interface. The usual video game designer salary levels for these different positions are dependent on various factors like job experience, geographic location, job title, educational level and the employer you are working for. A typical video game designer salary for a junior designer is roughly $40,000 per year. This could rise up to over $100,000 after six or more years of industry experience. The video game designer salary amount increases with work experience, as is common in many industries. The greater practical work experience a person has, the more they are worth to the gaming company. The job location has a huge effect on salaries as some locations are much expensive to live in. You job designation is a factor as well. If there is junior in the title the job will pay less than the lead designer post. The gaming agency that you’re employed for matters too and staff game designers earn more money than freelance designers.

Game Testing – Learn to Market Yourself – Industry Gaming

Becoming a freelance game tester can be a great way to get into the video game industry. Finding bugs and glitches in games will earn you money from companies to go towards college or even to make a living. This work can be done at home and somewhat at your own pace. In order to earn a freelance living in game testing you first need to start looking for companies to send you beta testing and independently tested games. There is a link at the bottom of the page showing you how to sign up with these companies, but I will provide you with some ways that will help to market yourself as a tester.Gaming CommunityAlthough the gaming community is known for sarcasm and ruthless scrutiny, it still can help to be known amongst the fans of gaming. Start to let your job occupation be known and without leaking information, try to convey that you have worked on past games. Write posts and threads on forums, telling deep information (you will learn after signing up) on the game industry and video game testing. Although most gamers can be distasteful, do not submit to this kind of video game treatment. Don’t reply to any comments that are in fact distasteful in anyway and always be professional.BloggingStart a couple of blogs or a website talking about past projects you have worked on (unless the information you were given by a game company says otherwise). Tell your experience and if you have any schooling to back up your skills. Also provide any specific hardware platforms that you have tested on. Of course, mention that you are at a freelance status and willing to take work from an appropriate company. Video game conventions will have tons of companies, game developers and other testers. You need to network with these important people because they can consider you a future client. Talking to developers isn’t like talking to movie stars or pop artists they are gamers like you and me. Don’t be intimidated by their stature in the gaming community, just try to keep them interested and get their email.

Video Game Tester – Why Video Game Testing Programs Don’t Work – Industry Gaming

Something has really been bugging me about the video game testing industry, and what is it you might ask? It’s those video game testing programs. They’ve really been getting on my nerves because of all the horrible lies they tell you aspiring testers. You need to understand why these programs are not worth your time, and why they shouldn’t be used. Why video game testing programs don’t work
In the gaming industry, you’re not supposed to pay someone in order to get a job. In fact, for any career, you shouldn’t be paying anyone any amount of money so you can get a job. These programs are just trying to get your money and they won’t work for you. I can blabber on and on, but it won’t mean a thing unless I prove something to you. Okay then, think about this, if these programs actually work, then lets say that a thousand people get into the program, since this career is really big, they are stating that they will get you a job that can pay you up to $80 an hour to one thousand people. They are saying that one thousand people, right now, will get a job as a video game tester. If this is true, which I highly doubt that it is, then how come the game testing industry isn’t flooded with tons of workers? One thousand workers is good enough, but if another thousand join next month, how do you expect that they’ll get them jobs? And what about another thousand? It’s a chain that will simply break and not work.
Getting a job as a video game tester is absolutely free if you know how to do it. That’s right, you don’t have to pay in order to break into the industry like the programs claim you’re supposed to do. Signing up as a tester is 100% free, so it blows my mind to see people actually paying programs that don’t even work to get them a job!

Video Games – Not Good For People? – Industry Gaming

I love that question. It’s usually a topic of discussion among those that like to criticize video games, and nothing more, letting their peers and friends know that games are good for only one purpose, “rotting one’s brain.” What? Show me the stats where it explains, in specific detail, that video games are the cause for “rotting people’s brains.” I think where this whole stereotype stemmed from is the fact that video games carry one element with it that most other forms of entertainment don’t: Interactivity. It’s a result of this interactivity, the fact that your doing more than participating passively, that has people worried. But it still doesn’t make sense. Do you ever hear people mentioning that movies are bad for you because it’s not good for your brain? Comments along those lines. The answer is obvious – probably not. Same with virtually any other form of entertainment. Again, it’s just not clear to me.Let’s break things down a little more. Let’s face it, people have this stereotypical image of their kids sitting on a couch, and basically looking like nothing more than a bunch zombies. You know, you’re right in front of your television, in a darkened room, eyes wide opened, staring at a television – that type of image. Not good. Now let’s go back to movies for a second. What’s the main source of action that is being done when watching a movie? That’s right, staring at the television screen, or in some cases, your local movie theatre screens. So then, why don’t we have a stereotypical image of hundreds of people at our local movie theatres, in a darkened room, eyes wide opened, all looking like zombies? The answer: I have no idea! There might be one thing that has caused this particular stereotype, and that could be the amount of time some video games are played during one sitting. Even though this may be true, there is still one crucial factor that would dispute this claim – that answer would be television. It’s not uncommon to see someone watch television for several hours at any given time. Once again, the only action being taken while watching television, is that of passively watching. Well, you might be able to factor in changing the channels as some sort of action, but that’s besides the point.Regardless of where this stereotype for video games came from, and regardless of where it began, there’s no disputing the fact that it still exists. Even today, it is unfortunately very much alive. It’s changing though. Not long ago, a new system was released that you may have heard of, the Nintendo Wii. The Wii’s control interface is very different from what you would find in a more traditional video game system. It’s main premise is motion-based. Meaning, the games that you play have you moving your arms around, and in some cases, your entire body. That’s where Wii Fit comes in, an upcoming new release for the Nintendo Wii that has you moving your entire body around. The introduction of motion-based interaction is really starting to penetrate the “video game consciousness.” As a result of this “penetration”, it is helping to tear down, layer by layer, all of the negative stereotypes that have been associated with the video game industry for far too long.Breaking down these “negative layers” is really what the industry, as a whole, is focused on. It’s a weird thing, because I can almost guarantee that the people that do criticize the industry for these types of things, are usually the ones that know nothing about it. Like all things in life, you have to try and find balance. Whether that’s playing video games, watching t.v., or listening to music, it simply doesn’t matter. So, are video games not good for people? Personally, I think that’s completely untrue. In reverse, video games can be something that brings joy, fun, and excitement. The decision though is not mine – That answer is reserved for each individual, nothing more and nothing less.
